Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced that his company Tesla will be introducing a software update for all its cars that will allow them to be completely autonomous. The new updated software will be available only on 1000 test cars where this software will be tested.
All other vehicles of Tesla will have the software, but it will be operating only in the shadow mode. What this means is that the car will not function with this software, but it will surely capture data of the car and will relay back what its actions would have been, had it not been in the shadow mode. This will allow engineers at Tesla to gather information about how their software will behave in different situations and will allow it to make changes in case of any issues that it can see. Based on this, if no problems are seen during the trial period, all Tesla cars will be made active on this software.
The new software will be called Autopilot HW2. Ludicrous+ is an acceleration feature that can take the car from 0 – 60 mph in 2.4 seconds with just one touch. This software update improves the acceleration by a millisecond.
Elon Musk had earlier announced that this feature would be launched in December 2016, but it is finally out in January 2017. New Tesla cars have been fitted with a radar for faster data processing, new hardware, 12 new sensors and 8 cameras that can help a car to become completely autonomous. The older models of Tesla which do not have these upgrades will not be able to perform this function, but they will get other updates to improve their ride quality.
This new software will let a car to drive a person from one place to another, drop him off and park the car, all with the user touching just one button. The details of this are still not very clear, but the genius founder of Tesla, Space X and Hyperloop – Mr. Elon Musk believes that an autonomous software is twice as safe as a human behind a driving wheel.
