German Chancellor, Angela Merkel states that tech giants like Google and Facebook have been successful in “narrowing perspective” and have demanded them to release their privately developed algorithms publicly. Angela has also been in news previously for blaming the social media for anti-immigrant sentiments.
Angela Merkel who is the Chancellor of Government of Germany stated that tech giants, Google and Facebook are constantly “narrowing perspective” and has demanded them to release their privately developed algorithms publicly to the people so that they know how they are going to get affected by their works online. Angela Merkel has also been in news recently for blaming the social media for anti-immigrant sentiments inheritance.
Angela stated in her statement, “The algorithms must be made public, so that one can inform oneself as an interested citizen on questions like, ‘what influences my behavior on the internet and that of others?’ These algorithms, when they are not transparent, can lead to a distortion of our perception, they narrow our breadth of information.”
Google and Facebook use some algorithms to decide which search results are shown first and which should be shown last according to the user’s interest and they use the same algorithm to promote links to news articles and advertisements in order to serve the user in a “better” way.
According to her report, these algorithms comprise some of the most highly protected trade secrets of the world which amounts to around billions of dollars and till now no internet giant has ever revealed its inner workings.
Merkel pointed, “The big internet platforms, via their algorithms, have become an eye of a needle which diverse media must pass through to reach users. This is a development that we need to pay careful attention to.”
I agree with her perception as if we don’t know how our actions can harm us or do well to us then how can we act significantly? We don’t know who’s on the other end and how on the other end our data is being handled. Is it safe or not?
We need to know.
