The Indian Super League will witness the strong Mumbai team take the battle to the men from Chennayin, champions of last season at the Mumbai Football Arena on Wednesday evening. Mumbai are riding high on confidence after a 5-0 thrashing of Kerala Blasters in their last match, courtesy of marquee player, Diego Forlan’s hat-trick. With a win, Mumbai can seal their semi-final berth as they sit pretty at the top of the league table with 19 points from 12 matches. “We are on the way. We know that to achieve the first goal is to get to the play-offs. It’s good to have these many points with two games to be played but we have to get more. 19 points are not enough. We must have more good performances,” Mumbai City’s gaffer Alexandre Guimaraes was quoted as saying to the Sports Campus.
On today’s encounter against the Abhishek Bachchan owned team, the coach went on to add, ” We will have to play better than the last game to try and win to be in a very good position. We saw the game Chennayin played against ATK and they are still on course. They are very tough. They are champions and champions always like to fight till the very end.”
On the other hand, Chennaiyin FC drew their last game against Atletico de Kolkata 1-1, failing to sneak in a much needed win to boost their chances of qualifying for the next stage.
The team in sixth placed on the table with 14 points from 11 matches. The defending champions have shown their form and mettle but only in glimpses so far.
Ahead of this fixture, manager Marco Materazzi was quoted as saying to ESPN, “Football is not science or maths. All we can do is collect as many points as possible. What matters is getting to the playoffs and once you are there, the whole thing starts all over again.”
